“I’m too tired to cook,” was a frequent thought when I was working crazy hours. My lack of cooking at home was a contributor to my health issues.
In countries such as the USA, we have sacrificed quality on the altar of convenience and paid for it with numerous health challenges and therefore medical bills. I remember working in the college kitchen, and most of our food came pre-cooked. Often it was pre-seasoned too.
Contrary to how you may feel, eating at home is not a terrible chore. Read below to discover five benefits of eating at home.
1. Family time
When you eat at home, you are not surrounded by television, loud music, and many other distractions. You can spend quality time with your family and enjoy your meal.
Since everyone needs to eat dinner, you can eat dinner and spend time with your loved ones at the same time.
By eating dinner with your family, you will be able to have more control over your family’s health (more on that below).
2. Sanitation
On our honeymoon, my husband and I ate a delicious meal at a restaurant he loved as a teenager. Fully satisfied with our meal, we exited through the back door, and I was appalled at the state of the floors.
When you eat at home, you can choose to keep your kitchen clean so that your family stays healthy. If you have ever watched videos of what goes on behind the scenes at a restaurant, you may never eat out again!
3. Education
How many people do you know that do not know how to cook? You do not need to rely on home economics or culinary classes alone to teach your children. They can learn by watching you and helping you in the kitchen.
You can teach your children why you are doing what you are doing. As they become older, they can learn to set the table, wash dishes, chop salads, and make simple meals.
You can bring your children grocery shopping and show them why you purchase what you do and how you plan to use the items that you purchase.
4. Frugality
Think of the last meal you ate out. Now think of how much healthy food you could have purchased at the grocery store for that amount.
That $1 burrito from the drive-through lane has hardly any nutritional value and will not do much to fill you up. The $1 organic avocado you can purchase ahead of time and with you is an excellent snack that has numerous nutritional benefits.
Yes, it takes some time to cook yourself. On the other hand, think of the time that you spend driving to a restaurant, waiting to be eated, ordering your food, waiting for the food to arrive, eating your food, waiting for the bill to be brought, waiting for your credit card to be returned, adding the tip, and driving back home.
You can also use leftovers for lunch the next day.
5. Health
When you eat at home, it means you have much control over what ingredients you use. You can avoid ingredients such as MSG, food colorings, and any food allergies you or your family has.
You can control portion sizes, cook double and freeze half the food for a later meal, and add extra meat or vegetables where you prefer.
You can also cook from scratch and make food that tastes much better than restaurant food. You will certainly feel the difference!
