Taking care of your body means eating right, exercising, taking good supplements, and getting sufficient sleep at night.  Yes, that is an admirable beginning, yet have you thought about your drinking and cooking water?

Your body is mostly water.  You need about 8 glasses of water per day to survive.  Drinking enough water is vital for many areas of your health.

If you do not filter your drinking and cooking water (at a minimum) or all the water in your home (the best option), you are poisoning yourself and your family.

Here are just 5 undesirable substances found in drinking water (it will vary by city and region, but this is a start):

1. Nitrates

Some people think that if they live in the country and drink well water, their water is safe.  I really wish this were the case, but run-off from farmers pesticides and fertilizers is very likely in your water.

What’s wrong with nitrates?  They cause cancer.  Here is an article warning Minnesotans, yet Minnesota is not the only state which has farmers.

2. Arsenic

According to the World Health Organization, “Long-term exposure to arsenic from drinking-water and food can cause cancer and skin lesions. It has also been associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In utero and early childhood exposure has been linked to negative impacts on cognitive development and increased deaths in young adults.” (emphasis mine)

I’ve previously written about food to avoid eating if you do not want to get cancer.  It’s also imperative to filter your water if you want to avoid cancer.

3.  Medication

Yes, other people’s medication is in your drinking water.  Several problems are present here. If, like me, you avoid medication at all costs, you are still ingesting it through drinking water.  If you already are taking medication, the foreign medication in drinking water could negatively react with the medication you are taking.  Read more here.

4.  Toxic cleaners

I’ve written extensively about toxic cleaners.  They cause multitudes of health problems, and they are in your water unless you filter your water.

5. Birth control

Again, what others are ingesting internally eventually is present in your water.  If you have young children, you would not give them hormonal birth control.  Also, if you would like to have a baby soon, you would not be on birth control; however, you may be taking some birth control unknowingly.

If your hormones are unbalanced, you definitely do not want to be on birth control!

These are just a few of the contaminants in your drinking water along with other chemicals added to your water.

Go here to learn if you live in one of the worst cities for contaminated drinking water.

Please realize that you are ingesting these chemicals by cooking with city water, drinking city water, washing your hands, and taking a shower or bath.

One way to avoid drinking the contaminated water is to purchase a good filter.  No, you do not want a cheap filter like Brita.  From my experience, it makes the water taste worse.  My favorite filter is reverse osmosis.  If you purchase a filter, it is vital that you change the inside filters frequently enough.

Another way to ensure that your drinking and cooking water is pure is to purchase reverse osmosis water.  While many stores provide water refills, our best experience has been to visit the local co-op to purchase our water.  It seems that other stores do not service the machines frequently enough.
