Luba: Welcome to my blog, Hannah! It’s a pleasure to have you. For those who have not heard about you before, please share a little about yourself!
Hannah: Hi! It’s great to be here! I’m Hannah E. Griggs, an author, and, most importantly, a daughter of the King of kings. I live on a mostly-wooded five acres in Texas. I enjoy reading, playing my guitar, and cross-stitching, among other things. I have several chronic illnesses, and my limited energy for physical activities gives me more time to pour into my writing.
I love flowers and bird-watching and just being out in nature in general. That’s one of my favorite things about where I live. When the weather is nice, you’ll often find me out walking with my sister and dog. Our walks are some of my best times for brainstorming whatever book I’m currently writing.
Luba: What do you enjoy most about self-publishing a book?
Hannah: I enjoy the control that goes with publishing a book myself. I’ve heard of authors who have changes made to their stories that they would have rather not had happen. Or authors who aren’t happy with the covers that the publishers give them. With self-publishing, I get to have the final say in these decisions, so that when the book is published it still resembles the story that God gave to me.
Luba: After writing and publishing three contemporary fiction books, what inspired you to write a historical fiction book?
Hannah: In a way, this book has taken me back to my original passion as a writer. My very first story I ever wrote was historical fiction, and out of all the many stories I worked on in my teens, all of those were historical fiction as well, probably because history was my favorite subject from elementary school to high school. Remember My Royalty was a story that I had wanted to write for several years, and a trip to the Alamo in 2024 was the nudge I needed to dive in and write the book.
Luba: What part of Remember My Royalty was your favorite to write?
Hannah: Definitely the siege of the Alamo. It was a tricky part to research since there were so few survivors, but I loved pouring my heart into writing the various highs and lows during the siege. I put myself into the men’s shoes, and immersed myself in the feelings that they must have felt as they watched the powerful Mexican army move in closer and closer, preparing for the inevitable attack.
It was not always easy to write. I came close to crying, if not actually cried, over parts of it. But it was such a meaningful part of the book to write. As a Texan, I’ve always greatly appreciated the sacrifice of the men of the Alamo. But I saw it in a new way while writing. Learning about the men, I saw them as individuals, as fathers, husbands, sons, and friends. I realized what a tremendous impact their deaths had on so many. And now, those lists of names of the men who died at the Alamo mean so much more to me than they did before. For now, I know who these men were.

Luba: Who was your favorite historical character to research?
Hannah: Love this question! There were a lot of historical characters that I enjoyed researching, but my favorite would have to be John Files Tom. I know most people have never heard of him, but he was a true Texas hero who joined the fight for independence while he was still just a boy. I learned some interesting and humorous things about him while researching, and I enjoyed being able to incorporate what I learned into the story.

Luba: Who is your target audience?
Hannah: I advertise my books as being older middle-grade, so targeting readers from about 10-14. But in a broader range, I like to think of them as being family stories. They would make great read-alouds that everyone would be able to enjoy. And in fact, some of my biggest fans have been adults!
Luba: How can my readers help you to spread the word about your book Remember My Royalty?
Hannah: That’s a great question! The main way would be to go ahead and join my launch team for the book. They’ll get access to various promotional graphics that they can use on social media or in a newsletter, as well as a whole list of ideas on how to share about the book, from social media to word of mouth. And for every way they share, they can earn points for the launch team giveaway.
Luba: Would you like to give us a hint about what types of book(s) you may publish next?
Hannah: The next one will probably be Avalanche Adventure, Book #4 in the H.E.L.P. series. After that, the next one might be a mystery set in the early 1950s, or it might be a contemporary story about two sets of siblings. Or it could be the final H.E.L.P. book!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful answers, Hannah!
