How embarrassing! I can’t leave the house now! Have you ever thought these words as you woke up in the morning and looked in the mirror?
In addition to being embarrassing, acne can be very painful. It appears mostly on the face and back yet can infect any part of your skin.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.”
Your skin is your body’s largest organ and renews itself every thirty days. If you are breaking out, it is not necessarily your skin’s fault but how it is being treated.
Here are very common triggers of acne to avoid for clearer skin:
1. Harsh laundry detergents.
When you wash your towels (or any laundry, for that matter), all the laundry detergent does not wash out. Depending on how much laundry detergent you use for doing laundry, there is still quite a bit of it on your towel as you dry off your face. These harsh chemicals can irritate your skin and make it break out.
2. Face wash that dries out your skin.
When your skin is oily, you don’t need to go to the other extreme and dry it out. Instead, wash it with a gentle pH-balanced cleanser. Both oily and dry skin can cause acne!
3. Greasy foods
Have you noticed how your face looks after eating fast food or fried food? Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet to replace the greasy foods.
4. Sulfates
Sulfates are cleansing agents and can be found in your shampoo, conditioner, and other personal care products. These sulfates can cause your skin to break out. The great news is that you do not need to use personal care products with sulfates in them.
5. Oily creams
If you are suffering from acne, you are probably using some kind of creams on your face. Make sure that they are not oily; otherwise, you are just aggravating your skin further.
You also want to avoid any skincare products with mineral oil in it because mineral oil clogs your pores.
6. Touching your face
The oils and bacteria from your hands can cause your face to break out. Notice how many times you touch your face every day and make a plan to break that habit for clearer skin!
7. Milk and wheat products
Your skin’s health does not begin with the skin but with your digestive system. Both cow’s milk and wheat products are hard on your digestive system. Replace cow’s milk with almond milk or goat’s milk.
