It’s intolerably hot!   Running the A/C is an option, but it’s not wise to do so around the clock unless you are in very hot, humid weather or if you have a heart condition.  Go here to learn more about the downfalls of using air conditioning.

As much as you were eagerly anticipating warmer weather, extreme heat makes you tired and cranky.  At night, it’s difficult to sleep when it’s too warm.  What can you do to stay cool this summer?

Here are a few options:

1. Stay inside or in the shade when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

During 10 am and 2 pm, do your inside chores, read, or go grocery shopping.  You can also enjoy a good book outside in the shade.

You will stay cooler and more energized since the sun will not drain your energy.

2.  Wear cotton clothing.

Linen is another natural fabric that will allow your skin to breathe.  Avoid fabrics that are synthetic (polyester, rayon, etc.) because they will make you feel warmer.

3.  Place frying pan or other shallow pan of ice in front of a fan.

This is a way of creating a mini air conditioning unit, and it takes up less energy than the window units in many apartments and older homes.

4.  Eat cool foods.

Soups and casseroles are perfect for fall and winter.  This summer, enjoy salads (think tuna and chicken salad) and sandwiches (replace bread with lettuce leaves to make your sandwiches healthier).

Smoothies and protein shakes make quick, easy, healthy, and cool breakfasts.  Go here to learn more about protein shakes.

5.  Wear a light-colored, wide-brimmed hat when you are outside.

The hat will serve the following two purposes:  keep you cooler and also help you to avoid sunburn.  You want a hat that is light-colored because it will not absorb the sun’s rays and therefore keep you cool.
