Most of us are eating at home more often.  This is a perfect time to improve your eating habits and eat healthier foods.

During this coronavirus time, it has been very interesting to me that many packaged foods have sold out, yet produce has been available in the stores I have visited.  This is good news for those of us who want to eat healthy.  Yes, there are some packaged foods that are healthy too, but the availability of fruits and vegetables is encouraging.

Healthy food will support your immune system while unhealthy food will damage it.  In addition, eating healthy food is one way to manage your weight effectively, while unhealthy food can make you gain unwanted weight.  For more reading about healthy food in your home, go here.

Here are just a few healthy food substitutes you can make:

1. Instead of chocolate chips, use cacao nibs.

Chocolate chips have large amounts of sugar in them, while cacao nibs are just cacao. No one’s diet needs extra sugar added right now.

Cacao is a superfood high in magnesium and antioxidants.  You can add cacao nibs to cookies, homemade trail mix, or granola.

2.  Instead of bleached flour, use organic whole wheat flour, buckwheat flour, or almond flour.

First, who wants to eat bleach?  Not I.  Buy organic whole wheat flour.  If you are allergic or intolerant to gluten, use buckwheat or almond flour.

There are hundreds of recipes using whole wheat flour or your healthier flour of choice.  Here is a gluten free buckwheat flour pancake recipe I enjoyed (without the sugar) and used the same recipe to make buckwheat bread.

If you are having trouble finding flour, check your local health food store or co-op.

3.  Instead of eating peanut butter, eat almond butter.

Peanuts often have mold in them.  In addition, they cause inflammation.  This means your joints, heart, and stomach can be in pain after eating them.

Almond butter is delicious.  You can purchase it at a health food store or Trader Joe’s if you prefer not to make it at home.

4.  Instead of eating potato chips, eat fresh vegetables.

Potato chips will not satisfy your need for nutrients.  In addition, they are very expensive.  An 8-ounce bag of ripple potato chips (Target brand) costs $1.99.  That is $4 a pound.  You can purchase much organic produce for less than $4 a pound, including carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower.

On the other hand, vegetables are full of fiber and other vitamins and nutrients. By eating vegetables, you can save money and be much healthier.

5.  Instead of eating fruit snacks, eat fresh fruit.

You can also make smoothies out of fresh or frozen fruit.  Target’s Market Pantry fruit snacks have 13 grams of added sugar in a 23 gram serving.  That’s over half sugar!  In addition, the nutritional value of these fruit snacks is very small.
