2020 brought much uncertainty to our lives. At present, 2021 seems to be a continuation of 2020. When times are uncertain, it is easy to become discouraged and even paralyzed to the point of doing nothing. We have the choice to be sad, angry or bitter, or to be joyful and focus on what we can control.
Here are just some comforts that you can enjoy no matter what the world situation is.
1. Healthy and delicious meals
Nothing cheers a person like a delicious, healthy meal. Meals can remind us of good memories with family. During uncertain times, it is vital to keep the body fed and well-nourished.
2. A clean and tidy home
Have you ever stayed in a hotel room that was not close to clean? I have, and it was stressful. After I had cleaned the room, it was more bearable to be there. (In case you are wondering, I have learned to bring my own cleaner to hotel rooms, but that is a story of its own.)
A dirty, cluttered home can stress you out. You will always be thinking about something that needs to be clean. On the other hand, a clean and tidy home will create an atmosphere of peace and calm in your home.
3. An amazing-smelling home
The first step to make your home smell amazing is to clean it. No, Febreeze won’t do it!! It will matters matters worse. After you clean your home, air it out. Next, you can add scent. I like to diffuse essential oils. Baking bread or roasting a chicken will make your home smell wonderful too! When you are not baking, you can simmer some spices on the stove with orange peel.
4. Reading a book you have been intending to read for a long time
A wholesome book can take your mind off your troubles and help you learn something instead! Re-reading a good book can be like visiting with a dear friend.
Books are also an excellent alternative to screen time, which tells us how chaotic everything is and is also addicting.
5. Reminiscing by looking at pictures from a favorite vacation
Most of us cannot go anywhere right now, whether or not we want to do so. You can travel by reading books and also by looking at pictures that will bring back fond memories!
6. Bible reading
The Psalms have been a comfort to me through many trials. If you are not sure where to begin, they are a good place. You can also listen while you do wash dishes or mop floors ,
7. Prayer
Prayer is a comfort because you are taking your needs and concerns to Someone Who can help you with them. When you feel as though you cannot tell your problems to anyone, you can tell God.

When feeling sad or discouraged I love to listen to gospel piano music and instrumental. I also enjoy classical and easy listening music. Singing along with my blue grass gospel groups really lift my spirit and always puts a smile on my face! Reading my Bible is my go to, it always encourages and strengthens me to keep going forward for the Lord
Sharon, thank you for sharing. Music definitely helps. I like hymns and classical music. The Bible is definitely the best remedy for whatever is the matter.
Very well written! Taking a walk and checking in on a neighbor helps me, too <3
Diane, thank you for taking time to read and to add what helps you. Checking on a neighbor will certainly give that neighbor much comfort too. 🙂
Great ideas! I try to implement many of them, but many more need some more work!
Ashley, thank you for your kind words. We all need reminders, and it’s interesting that I wrote this article a week before I needed to implement all of these.
These are all very good areas in which we can put our focus anytime. I agree about music and listening to the Bible.
Another suggestion is journaling to get all those uncertainties out of our minds.
Thank you, Beth, for your excellent suggestion of journaling. 🙂
Luba, those are all wonderful and simple things we can all do, and that can make a big difference in the peace and calm we can have in our own hearts and homes no matter what crazy things are going on in the world. Thanks for sharing!
Cara, thank you for your kind words. Focusing on our own hearts and homes is the key, isn’t it?
